CRYSTAL Engineering

The various modules currently available in CRYSTAL have the ultimate goal of building a reliable reservoir model that could be used by reservoir engineers in simulation and field development. The new revolutionary workflow used in CRYSTAL allows the reservoir engineer to access all the geophysical and geologic information which is readily available in depth on a common geocellular grid. This grid and its numerous reservoir properties could be used to design optimal well trajectories. If the needs arise, the grid used throughout the geophysical and geologic tasks could be upscaled into a smaller grid. Other breakthrough reservoir engineering technologies are currently under development and will be available in the upcoming releases of CRYSTAL. The current version includes the following modules:

Well Planning and Design

 

Many surface constraints can make well planning a challenging task. Given the reservoir properties and the well trajectory constraints, CRYSTAL provides the necessary tools to optimize the hydrocarbon recovery while minimizing the costs and drilling risks.

 
 

Upscaling

 

As the seismic grids have an areal resolution corresponding to the size of the seismic bin (typically 12 -25 meters) and a vertical resolution of 1-3 meters, the resulting geocellular grids used in the geophysical and geologic tasks have a size varying between 50 to 500 million cells. These grids can be built and used in CRYSTAL but are one order of magnitude larger than the grids commonly used by other geomodeling software and two orders of magnitudes larger than the grids used by reservoir simulators -hence the need for upcaling the grids and their attributes. CRYSTAL provides a multitude of upscaling methods including: Arithmetic, Harmonic, Geometric, Arithmetic-Harmonic, Harmonic-Arithmetic, Arithmetic-Geometric, Geometric-Arithmetic, Harmonic-Geometric, Geometric-Harmonic and Renormalization which is very adapted to upscaling very quickly permeability models.
